This year I decided to introduce clay to 5th Grade with a cooperative project. I wanted to make some totem poles that we could place in the flower beds outside of our school to bring a little more interest to them. 5th Grade students watched a video on the history of clay and ceramics, then they voted on a theme for their class totems. The choices were rainforest, ocean life, and garden life. After choosing their theme each class sketched out their totem on paper. Then began the clay process. Here are some pictures of the first 3 classes of totems drying.
