Ceramics II Curriculum

Mediums & Tools

Ceramics II primarily deals with the medium of plastic clay. Each experience with clay should end with the production of a finished piece. Through the artistic process the students should get multiple opportunities to use clay and its associated tools (for example: Pottery wheel, Slab Roller)

Techniques and Skills

Each of these techniques and skills must be covered in the Ceramics II experience. Keep in mind that some techniques and skills work better with different construction methods(for example: leather hard slabs to create geometric forms). Demonstration and understanding of these techniques and skills will be reflected in the student’s portfolio. The students will also understand and aid in the completion of the ceramic process. The portfolio in Ceramics II is designed to show a student’s experience with the media, techniques and skills stated above. All of the specific projects below must be represented in the portfolio. Any medium or technique may be use to complete these projects. The students need to build a physical, digital or e-portfolio to represent the work completed in ceramics II.

The advanced ceramics students will be exploring many methods and materials in clay. These include hand building, pinch method, coil construction, slab building, drape molds, potter’s wheel and surface decoration. Our classroom is equipped with a slab roller, 9 potter’s wheels, many glazes, and tools. We look at different cultural aspects of the ceramic vessel through history and in our world.
